Press statement by the President of the Republic, Michel Temer, after the results of the second round elections

Brasília-DF, 28 October 2018

Good evening. I want to make a brief statement regarding the election of the new President of the Federative Republic of Brazil. And the first message I want to send is exactly and precisely that the people today have exercised their power. By the way, when the elections take place, it is the right time for the people to exercise a power that is theirs. The power to say who is going to run the country. And this was done with all tranquility, with all harmony, with all sovereignty that the people knew how to exercise today.

I just greeted President-elect Jair Bolsonaro. I could see his enthusiasm, not only when he talked to me, but also when he made a statement that seeks precisely the country's unity, that seek the pacification of the country, that seek harmony in the country. It is what everyone wishes and surely I can say again, witnessing the words of the president-elect, that he will seek precisely this.

I would also like to say, at this moment, I am once again communicating to all of you that, starting tomorrow, we will begin the transition. And in the transition, regarding physical infrastructure, of course we organised the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil and I will offer to him also, to his team, the Granja do Torto. If he wants to occupy it, he can. The transition is already practically formatted, organised. This will lead to a transition book to reveal what has been done and what still needs to be done or will continue to be done.

Especially on the economic level, we must work together to maintain, to continue what we have already done, that everyone has done. The economic policy that has prevailed in the country, in addition to other environmental, educational and health policies.

I have absolute conviction, as the president-elect has declared, that he will have, as I have already said, a government of great peace, a very harmonious government, which is what our country needs the most.

Thank you very much.

President Temer: Ah, I did not mention it. If I knew you were going to ask that question…

It was not a thing, I called immediately as soon as the result came out. Evidently he had a lot of people next to him, didn't he? So I too was kind enough to not stretch matters. Now let's wait for this week, let's see what meetings we'll have, won't we? Sorry... no, he did not say, he did not report it. In fact, I say again, a lot of people next to him, that natural euphoria of those who just won the election. It would be a little impolite if we started to ask questions etc.

President Temer: Sorry, there was no time. But I confess to you, that this is entirely at his disposal, at this time, for what is needed. Not only to use government services, but surely, as you said, to ensure their his . This we will

do, as we have already done, through the Federal Police, which has given broad support to and ensured the complete safety of the candidate, now president-elect.

President: I'm happy. In an election, thanking him very much for the call and of course saying that Brazil will continue working, what I said about the pacification.

President Temer: I did not discuss it with him. You must understand... Well, I'm going to tell you this: obviously, the moment we can talk, I'll offer the idea that we may still be able to vote pension reform, since it is formatted, ready to be voted on in two rounds in the Chamber of Deputies and the two rounds in the Federal Senate.

But I must also clarify, clarify to everyone, that it will only go forward if evidently there is support from the president-elect and his team. If that happens, I think it's still possible to do it this year. In other words, the road will be completely paved for the next administration.

President Temer: That will be the last question. I'm sorry? I understand, what I think is this: if it is to modify too much what is already ready to be voted on, of course there won't be time. But if we want to move forward and if the president-elect wants to move forward with the bill that is already ready, I think there will be time. We will have almost two months, almost two months ahead.

A good night to you.
