Press Release
The postponement of President Michel Temer’s trip to Asia was solely because, given the electoral calendar, the absence of the country’s Head of Government at this time would require the Presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate to also leave the country at the same time, thus harming crucial votes for the country. Chiefly among such votes is that of the bill that reallocates budgetary appropriations, which must be voted by 8 May to avoid a default by the country on guarantees offered to exports in past governments. This would bring immense harm to the entire Brazilian economy.
The investigation that includes charges against the president has 150 days to conclude, with the possibility of request for an extension for an additional 60 days, and it is not an urgent cause to justify a change of agenda. Only those uninformed regarding these circumstances would spread such an implausible version of the facts.
