President Jair Bolsonaro personally went to the National Congress on Wednesday morning (20) to submit the proposal for the New Pension System. Accompanied by Economy Minister Paulo Guedes and Presidential Chief of Staff Onyx Lorenzoni, Bolsonaro delivered the bill to the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies (Rodrigo Maia) and the Senate (Davi Alcolumbre).

The Special Secretary for Social Security and Labor, Rogério Marinho, who also attended the occasion, explained that the proposal aims to fight inequalities and privileges in the public and private sector pension systems. "Those who earn more will contribute more, and those who earn less will contribute less, which brings fairness to the whole of society." According to Marinho, the government expects to save about R$ 1.1 trillion in ten years with the proposed new rules.

He added that the executive will also introduce a new bill by Thursday (January 21) to guarantee the collection of social security debts starting at R$ 15 million. He said there are currently about 4,000 companies with debts of that size or larger.

Processing

In Congress, the New Pension System bill will be processed as a Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC). Before being presented for voting by the plenary of the Chamber, it will be reviewed by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) and a Special Committee. If approved, it will then go to a vote in the Senate, where it will also be reviewed by that house's CCJ before going for a plenary vote.
