In a statement to the press, President Jair Bolsonaro reaffirmed that the Brazilian government will continue to work to help restore individual liberties and democracy in Venezuela. The statements were made in the Planalto Palace after a reception for Venezuelan president-in-charge Juan Guaidó.
"We will spare no effort, under the law, our Constitution and our traditions, for democracy to be restored in Venezuela," he said, adding that “we know this will only happen through free and reliable elections".
Freedoms
Next to Bolsonaro, Guaidó said that it is necessary to protect individual freedoms throughout the region of South America to prevent "a small group from taking over the truth or taking away the resources of a people."
According to him, there are more than 300,000 Venezuelans at risk of death because of the humanitarian crisis facing the neighboring country. The President-in-charge added that the population of the country couldn't count on international humanitarian aid, since the Venezuelan authorities are not allowing donations to enter the country.
Lima Group
The Lima Group consists of 14 American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Saint Lucia) and was created to discuss the current crisis in Venezuela and contribute to the restoration of democracy in the country. According to Bolsonaro, the Brazilian government will continue to support all of the group's resolutions as part of the efforts to restore stability in the neighboring country.
