Measures that make the federal public administration more efficient, open up the country's economy and create more security for citizens are among the guidelines to be presented by President Jair Bolsonaro at the World Economic Forum in Davos. In addition to these actions, the government’s new stance has already started to show results in the economy, such as lower US dollar exchange rate and successive record highs in the stock market, caused by optimism with the new management.
Accompanied by a number of cabinet members, including Economy Minister Paulo Guedes, General Augusto Heleno (head of the Institutional Security Office - GSI) Justice and Public Security Minister Sérgio Moro and Foreign Affairs Minister Ernesto Araújo, the President of the Republic will have the opportunity to highlight actions carried out in the first days of government. Check out a few of them below:
Economic indicators
Important indicators such as the stock market and the dollar exchange rate have seen expressive improvements this month. The São Paulo Stock Exchange surpassed the historical mark of 92,000 points, reaching a record high 93,613 points. The US currency dropped in price from R$ 3.87 to R$ 3.73.
In the view of economist Carlos Eduardo de Freitas, the market’s enthusiasm with the government's economic policy explains the results. "The proposal to have a more open economy, with less State participation, with less direct State intervention, is very positive," he explained.
Structure
Aiming to increase efficiency and reduce federal government spending, President Bolsonaro signed a provisional measure that reduces the number of bodies with ministerial status in the administration. Among the main changes is the creation of the Ministry of the Economy, responsible for driving national economic growth and making the Brazilian State more efficient.
Pension Reform
The economic team is also working to complete the proposal for a Pension Reform bill that will be presented to the National Congress. In Bolsonaro's assessment, the public budget can soon collapse in the coming years if retirement rules are not changed.
Concessions
Expected to create 4,000 jobs, the Southern Integration Highway (RIS) was the first concession agreement signed by the government. The bid was won by the CCR Group, which is expected to invest R$ 7.8 billion in doubling the number of lanes and improving the conditions of the road.
Firearm possession
Last week, the president signed a decree regulating the possession of firearms in Brazil. The new decree guarantees the right to self-defense of citizens and can have relevant consequences to the economy. "I believe that every economic activity is benefited by fighting crime. The less hostile an environment is, the more prosperous its business environment is,” said International Relations specialist Creomar de Souza.
