Both countries have claimed possession of oil-rich region on the coast of Guyana

The Brazilian government reiterated on Saturday (January 12) that it is committed to working for a peaceful resolution of the territorial disputes between Venezuela and Guyana. The controversy between the two countries is historic, but rose in prominence recently after the discovery of oil in Guyana, with the Venezuelan government claiming ownership of the area.
