The Brazilian government on Wednesday (23) recognized Juan Guaidó, deputy and president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, as interim president of the country. A statement by President Jair Bolsonaro in Davos and a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs guaranteed political and economic support to Venezuela during the transition to a democratic regime.
After attending the event "Diplomatic Dialogue: A Global Response to the Humanitarian Crisis in Venezuela," Bolsonaro confirmed the decision and highlighted the next steps. "Brazil, together with the Lima Group countries, will provide all the necessary political support for the [transition] process to follow its course," he said in a press interview.
"Brazil recognizes Mr. Juan Guaidó as President-in-Charge of Venezuela. Brazil will politically and economically support the transition process so that democracy and social peace return to Venezuela,” said the Itamaraty, as Brazil's foreign ministry is called.
Repercussions
Similar positions were expressed by other authorities that participated in the meeting about Venezuela. "I want to express that Colombia recognizes Juan Guaidó as president of Venezuela and will monitor this democratic transition process," said Colombian President Iván Márquez.
"We fully recognize and support the interim conduct of the presidency of Venezuela by Juan Guaidó, in consonance with its Constitution ... It's an important day for Venezuela,” said Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada.
