With positive results in the areas of healthcare, education, economy and employment, President Michel Temer took stock of the major advancements in the country during a breakfast with foreign correspondents in the Planalto Palace on Thursday (6 December). For Temer, he is delivering to his successor as of 2019 a Brazil that is quite different from the country he found two and a half years ago.

Through his personal account on Twitter, the Brazilian president pointed out that the period in which he was at the country’s helm “has been a journey of hard work and achievements. Additionally, he stated that he has reached the end of his term “with the tranquillity of duty fulfilled”.

“I showed them the Brazil we found and the Brazil we're leaving to the next administration. I spoke about the public spending ceiling, upper secondary education reform, the modernisation of labour laws, pension reform, and the recovery of State-Owned Enterprises. In the social area, I singled out the readjustment of @bolsafamilia benefits”, he said through his account.

Desired since 1997, upper secondary education reform was made possible in Temer's administration. In healthcare, in addition to the increased budget, the sector also managed to save more than R$ 800 million, which allowed for the purchase of new ambulances and important equipment.

In the labour area, there was the modernisation of labour laws, which, according to Temer, was built jointly with the Ministry of Labour, trade unions and industry and services associations. The new law added flexibility to labour relations and gave more legal force to agreements between employers and employees.

In addition, measures such as the public spending ceiling and the appreciation of Brazilian State-Owned Enterprises have been fundamental to the development of the Country. According to the president, dialogue and partnership with the National Congress have made the achievements possible.

Foreign policy

“I am staunchly in favour of multilateralism. At the UN, I argued for this thesis, which is of strong interest to us”, he pointed in his personal account. At the meeting, the president cited Brazil's actions in strengthening ties between countries, such as the agreement signed between Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance signed in July this year. The joint declaration helped deepen the commercial relationship between the two blocs.
