The Foreign Ministers of the countries that make up Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) met in Brasilia on Thursday (6 December) to take stock of the progress achieved in the negotiations for the establishment of a free trade agreement between the bloc and the European Union.
Discussions will continue next Monday (10 December) in Montevideo, Uruguay, and serve as preparation for the Mercosur Summit, which will take place in the city on 17 and 18 December next.
During the meeting, the countries’ representatives “reiterated the strategic character and importance they attach to a speedy conclusion of the negotiations with the European Union, with a view to achieving a balanced outcome that is mutually beneficial”, said the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
The Mercosur and the EU have been negotiating a comprehensive agreement since 1999, including on free trade. Negotiations stagnated between 2004 and 2010, and were only resumed in 2016.
