Until 14 December, the Brazilian delegation at the 24th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-24) will reinforce the message that the preservation of nature and economic development are not rivals. To that end, government representatives intend to present examples of initiatives adopted in Brazil, both by private sector and by the government, that have contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The country's commitment to the Paris Agreement is to decrease emissions by 37% by 2025 and 43% by 2030, both compared to 2005 levels. At the end of last year, the reduced emissions made it possible to anticipate the fulfilment of the country's 2020 targets in relation to the Amazon and the Cerrado. The reduction achieved in 2016 and 2017 is equivalent to the sum of the emissions of the five largest European economies in 2016.
These results were achieved through actions created and put into practice by the government over the last two years, which will be detailed by Brazil at COP-24.
Protected Areas
One of the main measures that contributed to Brazil's good performance has been the increase in more than 94 million hectares of protected areas in the Amazon, Cerrado, Pantanal, Caatinga, Atlantic Forest and Coastal Marine biomes from May 2016 to June 2018. Currently, there are 335 federal protected areas in the five regions of the Country, totalling more than 167 million hectares.
Rural Environmental Registry (CAR)
The CAR is one of the main tools provided for in Brazilian forest related law for environmental conservation, adjustments properties need to make to comply with environmental law, the fight against illegal deforestation and the monitoring of areas undergoing restoration. The Registry also assists in the fulfilment of national and international targets for the maintenance of native vegetation and the ecological restoration of ecosystems. By 31 August 2018, the CAR featured more than 5.3 million entries, corresponding to a registered area of more than 495 million hectares.
Amazon Fund
Managed by BNDES and coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment, the Amazon Fund has supported 102 projects and disbursed more than R$ 1 billion for activities related to the conservation, monitoring, recovery and sustainable use of the Amazon forest and other Brazilian biomes.
Civil Society
Another priority of the Brazilian delegation at the event will be to promote the Talanoa Dialogue. In this context, Brazil will present initiatives from segments such as civil society, indigenous peoples, private sector and the scientific community that contribute to reducing emission of the carbon dioxide greenhouse gas.
