Brazil has donated R$ 15 million to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). The measure was made official by a provisional measure published in the Federal Official Gazette (DOU) on Tuesday (4 December).

According to the measure, the donation was made "for the purpose of welcoming people in situations of vulnerability due to migratory flows caused by humanitarian crisis." The UNHCR works to protect refugees and "promote long-lasting solutions to their problems," according to the agency.

Through the work of UNHCR, in partnership with the Brazilian government, refugees and migrants from countries facing humanitarian crises can obtain documents, work, study and exercise the same rights as any legalised foreign citizens in Brazil. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), in turn, is the leading intergovernmental organisation in the world on the area of migrants.
