Spending by foreigners who visited Brazil in August reached US$ 482 million, up 6.02% when compared to the same month last year and making it the best result for the sector since April. The numbers were released on Monday (24 September) by the Central Bank (BC).

From January to August of this year, spending by foreign tourists in the country reached a total US$ 4.13 billion. This represents a 4.7% increase compared to 2017. The figures spent by Brazilians on international travel, however, fell compared to last year: US$ 1.38 billion in August this year, against US$ 1.74 billion in the same month of 2017 (down 20.83%).

In the first eight months of the year, tourism exchange expenses totalled US$ 12.6 billion, up 2.06% over the same period in 2017. The number, calculated by the Central Bank, includes both expenses incurred with credit cards and the official exchange rate.
