Guatemalan authorities will have the support of the Brazilian government and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in its efforts to support land title registration and the demarcation of protected areas in Guatemala. The aim is to ensure environmental conservation and agricultural activities in the country's territories.

Experts from the groups involved went to the Central American country this week to plan activities, and will remain there until Saturday (4 August). Of the entire Guatemalan territory, 67% is dedicated to agricultural production, pasture and forestry activities. Of the 340 municipalities in the country, nine have been declared "areas with complete registry" and 68 are in the process of completing their land registry. The Information Registry (RIC) of Guatemala will be act as a partner in cooperation actions with the UN and Brazil.

History

The two countries began dialogue on land management projects in late 2017. At the time, Guatemala expressed interest in learning more about Brazil's land policies and how these strategies are associated with the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests (VGRT). A Guatemalan delegation came to Brazil to learn about our land registry system, land regularisation policies and agrarian reform, as well as the country's management practices for public land in environmental reserves and indigenous lands.
