Federal intervenor, General Braga Netto and the Public Security Minister, Raul Jungmann, in press conference on Thursday (14)
Data submitted to the President of the Republic, Michel Temer, by the federal intervenor in Rio de Janeiro, general Walter Braga Netto, shows the reduction of crime rates from April to May. Homicide dropped by 11.8%, while vehicle theft went down 5.9% and cargo theft, 15.7%. In addition to the figures, the general submitted the Strategic Management Plan of the Federal Intervention Office to the president.
Defined by Braga Netto as a "legacy for future governments", the plan has five strategic objectives. "One is the reduction in crime rates, which is a visible result", said the intervenor in a press conference after the meeting with Temer, Public Security Minister Raul Jungmann, Chief of Staff Eliseu Padilha and the Head of the Institutional Security Office, Sergio Etchegoyen.
For Jungmann, the previous figures already pointed to a reduction in criminality growth. “We have to keep an eye on it over the next months, to see if results are within what we expect [...] We had to restructure the security forces, who had seen better days, in order to reach the results", he argued. According to the minister, they are working with the Ministry of Culture to raise resources to foster a wide reaching training programme for cultural agents in Rio de Janeiro.
