Foreign tourists spent US$ 429 million in Brazil in May

International tourists spent more in Brazil in May compared to the same month of last year, according to the Ministry of Tourism. In the month, spending by foreign visitors increased by 2.3% to US$ 429 million, compared to US$ 419 million in 2017. Between January and May this year, total foreign tourist spending has reached US$ 2.86 billion, 6.71% higher than the sum for the same period of 2017.

Spending by Brazilians abroad has also grown significantly: 7.95% in May and 10.83% in year-to-date terms. According to numbers by the Central Bank, foreign currency spending grew from US$ 7.29 billion (Jan-May 2017) to US$ 8 billion January (Jan-May 2018).

“We have been working hard to increase the presence of foreign tourists on Brazilian soil. These figures show that we are on the right track, and that initiatives such as the facilitation of visas for Americans, Canadians, Australians and Japanese has been the right move," mentioned Tourism Minister Vinicius Lummertz.
