Brazilian government will collaborate on transportation of Brazilians, Temer said
Brazil and the United States are working together to reunite Brazilian children who were detained and separated from their parents, while attempting to enter US territory illegally. In a statement on Tuesday (26 June), President Michel Temer highlighted the need to resolve the case quickly.
The statement came after a meeting and official lunch with US Vice President Mike Pence, who has recently arrived in Brazil. "[It is an] extremely sensitive issue for Brazilian society and government. That is why I have asked for your special attention to ensure the rapid reunification of families," Temer said. Afterwards, the President also signalled the US is willing to find a solution to the issue.
According to data reported to the Itamaraty (Brazil's Foreign Ministry), there are at least 51 Brazilian children separated from their parents in shelters in the United States. The Brazilian government, Temer mentioned, could help bring the children back to Brazil if that is what the families wish, and will continue in touch with the American authorities.
In his address, Pence said that the US is open to receiving all foreigners who want to legally enter the country. Regarding the situation of the children, he said: "We are working to reunite the families, including Brazilian families. We will continue working".
