The Government of Brazil will launch a new programme to promote tourism in Brazil and create more jobs and revenue. With funds from the National Development Bank (BNDES), Sebrae and the General Tourism Fund (Fungetur), the new incentive package is expected to create two million jobs in the sector in 2018.

“Today, eight million people work in the tourism sector in Brazil. Through this initiative, we expect to employ another two million”, said Tourism Minister Vinicius Lummertz after a meeting with President of the Republic Michel Temer on Wednesday (9).

Credit lines

According to Lummertz, the programme will benefit from a R$ 5 billion BNDES credit line, known as Prodetur + Tourism, in addition to R$ 500 million from Sebrae and R$ 430 million from Fungetur. The goal is to enable states, municipalities and companies to invest in tourism in all Brazilian regions.

“The tourism sector has been growing at a faster pace than the rest of the economy. With this additional support, not only will it grow even more this year, but it will also gain another dimension”, explained the minister. He added that the programme will be launched in June.
