President Michel Temer asserted that the policies adopted by the Brazil government have done "much for the environment", highlighting results such as the 16% decrease in deforestation in the Amazon. "We have made great strides in the environment. A few days ago, I was complimented for the creation of the Alcatrazes Natural Refuge. We have expanded the Chapada dos Veadeiros [National Park] and the Rio de Janeiro biological reserve, and now we will take care of the preservation of marine waters," he said.

Temer attended a ceremony on Monday (12 March) to officially launch the initiative that allows companies fined for environmental violations to convert the payments into services to recover the São Francisco and Parnaíba river basins. The president emphasised the importance of such measures to advance in Brazil's fulfilment of international agreements and treaties for the environment. "We were one of the first countries to ratify our adhesion to the Paris Agreement, and we are aware of the need to comply with the agreement," he said.
