Foreign tourists visited Brazil at record-high numbers in 2017, even surpassing years in which the country hosted major global attractions such as the World Cup in 2014 and the Rio Olympics in 2016. In all, 6.5 million visitors came to Brazil from abroad in 2017, or 0.6% more than in 2016, an increase driven chiefly by increased travelling from other South American countries.

According to data from the Federal Police reviewed by the Ministry of Tourism, Argentina leads as the largest source of foreign tourists, followed by the United States and Chile.
