Carnival helps Rio start growing again

The year of 2018 is still starting and with it, the Rio de Janeiro a Janeiro programme ("Rio from January to January"), with events selected by the Ministry of Culture, aimed at generating income and employment in the state. However, the first two months of the year were enough for some results to be seen already.

Carnival: party, employment and income

Rio's carnival attracted 6.5 million people this year, but the party brought benefits for many more: the state's entire population. The figures prove this:

  • R$ 3.02 billion were injected into the economy;
  • The revenue generated was 6.8% higher than that of the Carnival in 2017;
  • 72 thousand jobs were created;
  • The party also generated R$ 179 million in taxes.

Rio to the whole world

 The flow of tourists in Rio increased by 7.6% compared to last carnival, reaching 1.05 million people. From this total, 931 thousand were Brazilians and 124 thousand were foreign nationals.

The majority of Brazilian tourists came from:

  • São Paulo (30.4%)
  • Rio Grande do Sul (13.1%)
  • Minas Gerais (10.3%)

Foreign visitors came from:

  • Europe (34.3%, from the following countries: France, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium)
