Brazil will have another US$ 4.8 million to continue actions for the protection of the ozone layer. The funding proposal was accepted by the Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund to implement the Montreal Protocol, an international agreement put in place 30 years ago to control ozone-depleting substances.

The release of these resources is the result of meetings held in Montreal over the last two weeks to discuss the issue. During these meetings, the Brazilian delegation, made up of representatives from the Ministries of Environment (MMA) and Foreign Affairs (MRE), presented its report on national actions to eliminate emissions that harm the ozone layer (a layer in our atmosphere that protects the planet from ultraviolet rays.)

The committee will have 540 million dollars to allocate during the 2018-2020 triennium. The funds will be used to replenish the budget of the Multilateral Fund with the aim of supporting ozone layer protection actions in developing countries.

The Montreal Protocol was created in 1987 and has today been acceded to by 197 countries, all committed to phasing out emissions of ozone-depleting substances. Brazil acceded to the Protocol in 1990 and, in 2010, zeroed its consumption of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
