5G technology is coming to Brazil. The country signed an agreement with the EU, US, South Korea, Japan and China to develop the platform.

The partnership was signed by representatives of the 5G Brazil Project - composed of 18 Brazilian representative entities, companies and research centres, including the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC).

Brazil is the sixth country to join the body that will decide how 5G technology will operate in the world, from research to standardisation and platform implementation.

"With this, Brazil enters a select team that has taken the lead in the development of fifth generation mobile technology," explained the Ministry's Information Technology Secretary, Maximiliano Martinhão.

Each nation in the group, in addition to the EU, has an association to discuss development of and promote 5G. These associations, now including Brazil, make multilateral agreements to develop the technology, with actions such as joint research calls, standardisation forums and annual information sharing events.

Brazil's participation is a result of the country's previous actions for the development of 5G technology in the country. The Brazilian government has already signed cooperation agreements with the EU and South Korea to exchange experiences and information on the technology.

In addition, in February this year Brazil formalised the creation of the 5G Brazil Project, aimed at fostering the building of the ecosystem for the fifth generation of mobile telephony in the country.

"Brazil has increasingly become an important place in international discussions for the development of information and communication technologies. This demonstrates that we have made the right decisions regarding investment in R&D projects in this field," said Martinhão.
