The Brazilian Ministry of Tourism launched a new campaign on Tuesday (14) called "Protect, Respect and Guarantee - All Together for the rights of children and youth". The initiative aims to encourage reports of any abuse or exploitation of children and adolescents through the 100 hotline.

The campaign, carried out in partnership with the National Secretariat for the Promotion of the Rights of Children and Adolescents, will feature three videos to be posted on social networks. The Ministry of Tourism is also discussing with airlines the possibility of broadcasting the videos on in-flight entertainment systems.

“We cannot allow tourism, an economic activity that generates millions of jobs, to be used as a platform for criminals to exploit our children and adolescents. The more people we can get involved in this protection network, the better," said Tourism Minister Marx Beltrão.

Despite the launch focusing on Carnival, the pieces were produced so that they can be broadcast throughout the year.

“The idea is to promote a cultural change in the country through more awareness of the concept of violation of the rights of children and adolescents, and the Ministry of Tourism is an important partner once again in the forefront of defending the rights of children and youth," said the National Secretary of the Rights of Children and Adolescents, Claudia Vidigal.

Reports

In 2016, the government received 77,290 reports of violation of the rights of children and youth. The number is 3% lower than what was recorded in the previous year. A total 17.4% of all last year’s reports came in the period between 5 and 24 February 2016, i.e. carnival season. The data comes from the Secretariat's Ombudsman's Office.

After a review, the reports received are forwarded to the competent authorities. The 100 hotline operates 24/7, and anonymity is guaranteed.
