In his first meeting after being sworn in as President of the Republic this Wednesday (31), Michel Temer asked ministers to endeavour to draft measures against unemployment. For Temer, generating jobs has to be the government’s first concern.
“There is a certain bitterness in people (and this we saw on the streets) exactly and precisely because of unemployment. Well, when we and our policy starts generating employment the bitterness will subside”, said Temer.
In his first address to the ministers, which was broadcast live on state network NBR, the president said to his cabinet that a new stage of his government is now beginning, with a horizon of two years and four months. He pointed out that during this period, all areas should work to put Brazil back on track.
“It is not enough for the president of the republic to centralise the decisions and determine what is the best way of doing it. What is important is that you are capable, as you have shown to be, of leading your ministries with this criterion in mind, so that in two years and four months’ time we may leave here under the applause of the Brazilian people”, he stated.
One of the actions determined by the president is the creation of a group to cut red tape and simplify processes in each ministry. Another determination was that each ministry should interact with their minister’s caucuses and parties in Congress to talk about the importance of the government’s proposals, like the ceiling for public spending and social security reform. “We have to insist with our caucuses – and I will do so personally -, so that we may have these matters approved, at least the ceiling, this year still.”
During the meeting, held moments before Temer boarded for China, the president also asked for help in publicising the trip, which has the attraction of investments in Brazil as its main goal. Temer also determined that ministers be firm in answering allegations of illegitimacy of the government.
“We have to be very firm. And a lot of times, firmness comes through elegance and not attack”, he pointed out.
